  • Describe a skewed distribution
  • Relate three measures of central tendency to a normal distribution
  • Relate three measures of central tendency to a positively skewed distribution
  • An intelligence test for which scores are normally distributed has a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Use this information to describe how the scores are distributed.
  • In two normal distributions, the means are 100 for group I and 115 for group II. Can an individual in group I have a higher score than the mean score for group II? Explain.

B. Apply knowledge of psychological research in answering the following questions about intelligence scores.

Chapter 7 Essay:
In a study, researchers use a photograph taken in a public park to examine how people perceive, learn and remember information. In the photograph, a woman is standing near a man who is seated on a park bench. The woman appears to be shouting at the man.

Participants in the study are exposed to the photograph for ten seconds and then are shown, each for ten seconds, several other photographs of people interacting. When all the photographs have been shown, the participants are asked about what they saw in the “public park” photograph. A significant number of participants describe the man as being the aggressor in an apparent disagreement with the woman.

Describe how each of the following concepts helps explain the perception of these participants. Be sure to begin by defining each concept in psychological terms.

  • schema
  • retroactive interference
  • representativeness heuristic
  • confirmation bias
  • framing

Scarlet Letter Extra Credit

The 11th grade English classes are presently reading the Scarlet Letter. In an effort to bring the story to life, the AP Psychology classes will partner with the English classes in a small social experiment. Your job during this experiment is to compile a case study on 3-4 students. You will be able to interact with the students; talk to them and ask them questions. While you are interviewing the students you will be trying to make them feel very insecure, embarrassed and generally just feel like a bad person. You want the student to feel as ostracized as Hester Prynne.
Specifics:
1. Describe the subjects background. Age, sex, appearance, grade, GPA, family structure, housing type, social circumstances, discipline record etc.
2. Describe any behaviors the subject presents. For this experiment you will want to focus only on negative behaviors and you will want to use PSYCHOLOGICAL terminology as much as possible.
3. Analyze the background and behavior and then suggest strategies to improve the subject's quality of life.
Field Trip Details:
You will report to PC8 at the beginning of second block on November 23rd. We will go to the English class as a group. You will then do your case studies. You will repeat this process during blocks 3 and 4. At the end of 4th block we will discuss your findings.

Your goal is to control a voluntary behavior either through reinforcement or punishment. The majority of class time will be spent on the acquisition and shaping processes.
For this social experiment you will need to explain you methods in a short essay. In your essay you should describe what general behavior you intended to control. You should also describe the type of reinforcement or punishment you used as well as the schedule of reinforcement or punishment. You will then need to detail the acquisition and shaping processes. And lastly, you will reflect on the success or the failure of the social experiment. The short essay will be due on the day of the test.
